Butterfly

About This Song:

Series: Digimon Adventure
Placement: Opening
Japanese Title: Butterfly
Time: 4:18
Style: Hard Rock
English Lyrics: Adam Pulver
I had liked this song before I was even into Digimon, and it seems that there are a lot of people who like this song who still *aren't* into Digimon! The symbolic value of the butterfly doesn't really come out until the end of the Zero Two series, and if you've seen it, it actually makes this song mean a lot more, whether with English or Japanese lyrics.

This, incidentally, was technically the first song I wrote for, although I have made so many revisions to it it's hard to say what it was when I finished it that first time. One of the interesting additions is a little nod to a different Butterfly song that remains near and dear to many anime fans. And both were cut out of the American versions of their media!

Butterfly

Just a butterfly so cheery, just flying without getting weary,
Someday I'll be there. I draw closer whenever I pray.
Living life so bright and merry, forgetting the unnecessary.
Someday I'll get there, and I'll come and I'll take you away.

But when I try-yai-yai-yai-yai,
My obligations keep on running me dry.
So tell me why-yai-yai-yai-yai,
I can't kiss them goodbye and shoot off to the sky.

And here in a world that feels like a dream,
Seems like only the nothingness beams
Thoughts that we must refuse-
Where nightmares are winning, where wishes will lose.
Although I've got unreliable wings,
Filled with pains that my memory brings.
We can fly over these things on my love.

Butterfly of endless eases, flying the eternal breezes,
Someday I'll be there and I'll find you wherever you are.
Doesn't matter what I'm yelling, the song I hear is so compelling.
I know I'll get there, even though it appears from afar.

But when I try-yai-yai-yai-yai,
There's all these orders I could never defy.
But someday I-yai-yai-yai-yai.
I will cease to comply when I take off and fly.

And here in this awful world from a dream,
Harder now to wake up than it seems,
From this nightmarish tale-
This place where common sense ain't as good as it's hailed.
Though I've got nothing left for today,
All these memories blocking my way,
I know we'll be okay on my love.

And here in a world that feels like a dream,
Seems like only the nothingness beams
Thoughts that we must refuse-
Where nightmares are winning, where wishes will lose.
Although I've got unreliable wings,
Filled with pains that my memory brings.
We can fly over these things, oh yeah...

And here in this awful world from a dream,
Harder now to wake up than it seems,
From this nightmarish tale-
This place where common sense ain't as good as it's hailed.
Though I've got nothing left for today,
All these memories blocking my way,
I know we'll be okay on my love.
